Phil Spencer is nothing if not consistent. For years the Xbox boss has talked about his preference for frame-rate over resolution, and Spencer sticks by this even at the dawn of a new console generation with the Xbox Series X. “The feel of the games [is] definitely something that we wanted to have more focus on, not just throwing more pixels on screen,” said Spencer in a new interview with Stevivor. These comments echo the ones he’s made in the past, as far back as 2014. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=igns-top-25-xbox-one-games&captions=true"] Techradar reported around the time of the launch of the first Destiny, Spencer said that “Frame rate to me is significantly more important to gameplay than resolution and the mix of those two which brings the right art style and freedom.” Frame rate is measured in frames per second (fps) is the frequency in which a frame of images is refreshed per second. Developers tend to try and at least achieve 30 fps as a threshold. However, a lower frame rate could lead to a bigger input lag which could impact gaming, especially games that require quick reflexes. Resolution meanwhile is the size of an image. The higher the resolution, the more details an image can produce. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/13/xbox-series-x-console-announcement-trailer] In the current and previous console generations (not including PC) the hardware is limited, so developers may have had to prioritize frame rate over resolution, or vice versa, though according to a report by Polygon the two aren’t directly proportional. Developers can increase the resolution to a point without affecting frame-rate. But that becomes less doable the more games ventures into the next-gen territory. With consoles like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 touting lightning-fast load times and 8K resolutions, it remains to be seen what exactly next-gen consoles will be capable of when it comes to frame-rates and resolution.
