Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has addressed the video message he previously released that many fans took as a farewell to his beloved Marvel character.
Back in May, Hemsworth released a short video titled 'Thank You! The Legacy of Thor,' showcasing a montage of clips — from his initial audition right up to his performance in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder — plus a message to fans reflecting on his many years as the Norse god.
"Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Hemsworth wrote in the video's description. "For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special... was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me.
"Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable. Next up, Doomsday!"
As IGN reported at the time, many fans took the video as something of a send-off, with Hemsworth reflecting on the role before making some kind of noble sacrifice in Avengers: Doomsday. (Imagine the shock if Thor fell to Doctor Doom straight away, immediately cementing the latter as a threat to all the Avengers! Plus, it would provide tragic symmetry with the sudden death of Loki in Infinity War, the opening of the previous Avengers two-parter.)
Now, Hemsworth has said he was aware the video had raised questions about his future — though said the intent of the message had been "misconstrued".
"I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, 'Ugh, we've given the wrong impression here.' We didn't do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little," Hemsworth told The Hollywood Reporter.
"I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career. So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn't anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way."
After eight MCU appearances to date, it's unclear how long Hemsworth will continue to play the character into the future.
The actor previously revealed he was ready to "close the book" on playing Thor, though more recently admitted he "didn't stick the landing" with the divisive Thor: Love and Thunder, and said he felt he owed fans one more appearance. Whether this means a Thor 5 at some point is uncertain, however — and for starters, the character will have to make it through at least one Avengers bust-up first.
Marvel is not known to be working on any new Thor standalone project, with its schedule taken up by Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Secret Wars over the next couple of years. Beyond that, Marvel has already committed to developing an X-Men reboot and Black Panther 3.
