Earlier this year, theaters were blessed with the return of Paul Thomas Anderson. The auteur finally got to work with Leonardo Dicaprio while introducing a new star, Chase Infiniti. One Battle After Another, a very loose adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, is already a frontrunner for next year's Academy Awards ceremony and one of the only 10/10 reviews at IGN in all of 2025.

If you’ve been itching to watch the movie at home (perhaps with a few small beers), OBAA is now available to rent or buy digitally.

PTA's One Battle After Another Is Now on Digital

One Battle After Another is arriving on digital a little under two months after arriving in the theaters. The film has grossed over $190 million globally, which is pretty impressive for an R-rated movie that runs upwards of three hours. The movie is now available to rent for $19.99 or purchase digitally for $24.99.

As someone who keeps an eye on digital releases, Friday releases are actually quite rare. (They’re usually on Tuesdays.) The last one I remember was James Gunn’s Superman, which was released sooner rather than later to help audiences prepare for Peacemaker Season 2. In this case, the Friday release may just be a testament to the film itself.

Michael Calabro’s 10/10 review of the movie says, “There are so many little details, seemingly inconsequential touches – the filmmaker’s style, if you will – that all add up bit by bit to turn this amazing movie into a masterpiece.” He praises both PTA as well as the cast that bring the film to life. I will add my hype to the pile by saying it has one of the best car chase sequences since Mad Max: Fury Road.

4K and Blu-ray Release January 20

For anyone who did catch OBAA in theaters, I’d recommend saving your money for a good ol' DVD. In fact, I’d recommend this option to pretty much anyone, as it’s roughly the same price as the digital release which, all things considered, you don’t quite get to ‘own.’ You can’t proudly display your digital library on your shelf, a joy in the life of any cinephile.

A 4K ($29.99), Blu-ray ($24.99), and DVD ($19.99) of One Battle After Another are still available to preorder and will all be released on January 20. A limited edition collector's edition steelbook with special features curated by PTA himself was briefly available before selling out, but there's the off chance we see some restocks over Black Friday. The more likely outcome is we see those 4K steelbooks hitting the eBay market at ludicrous prices.

What About Streaming?

One Battle After Another is a Warner Bros. movie, so it will eventually land on HBO Max. Recent Warner Bros. releases like Superman and Final Destination: Bloodlines came to streaming a little over three months after arriving in theaters, putting OBAA’s streaming release date somewhere between late December and early January. In the meantime, HBO Max is certainly a key part in potential bids for Warner Bros., which Paramount and Netflix have both expressed interest in.
