Someone’s interested in coming back. That someone is Pierce Brosnan, who is perhaps best known for his tenure as the iconic 007 AKA James Bond — but he’s not looking to return as the legendary spy. He’s interested in coming back as Doctor Fate in James Gunn's upcoming Man of Tomorrow, which the actor has heard will reintroduce his former DCEU role.
"I’ve heard that Doctor Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie,” Brosnan recently said during a recent interview with GQ. "I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman. I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it."
It would definitely be interesting to see Doctor Fate return in Man of Tomorrow. Brosnan has only played the character one time while appearing in the 2022 film Black Adam and, if you remember, Doctor Fate totally bit the bullet in that film. Plus, the movie was part of the old DCEU, the shared universe that existed before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as studio heads.
That said, the new DCU has already brought back characters from the previous regime before, so Brosnan’s character would be one of several.
How Gunn and co would do it, though, is the question. The thing that seems most plausible is to have Brosnan back to play a new version of the character. Gunn’s Superman does tentatively set that up should they want to go that route — particularly with the mural in the Hall of Justice, which shows several major Justice Society of America heroes, of which Doctor Fate is a member — so the opportunity is there.
That said, there’s no confirmation just yet of Doctor Fate joining the new DCEU with Man of Tomorrow, and there’s no official word on whether or not he’s going to star in any spinoffs.
Man of Tomorrow is currently set to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.
